Madan Lal Lauds BCCI’s Move On Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan; Says ‘No One Is Bigger Than The Game’

New Delhi: After Kapil Dev and Kirti Azad, another India’s 1983 World Cup-winning member, Madan Lal, lauded BCCI for the action taken against Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan after the duo refused to play domestic cricket despite the Board’s directive. Both Iyer and Kishan were dropped from the BCCI Central Contracts earlier this week as they refused to play Ranji Trophy for their respective state sides despite being fit, instead opting to prepare for the upcoming Indian Premier League.

Domestic cricket is the backbone of Indian cricket as all grind through the rigorous system before making it to the Indian team. For the fact, Iyer himself made the Indian dressing room through domestic cricket. Lal reckoned that domestic cricket should be made a priority for the players who give first-class matches a miss for IPL.

“If the BCCI told them to play first-class cricket, they should have gone and played. No one is bigger than the game. The BCCI should be given the credit as they are making it mandatory to play first-class cricket,” Lal was quoted as saying to TOI.

“Most of the players nowadays are taking First-class cricket for granted because of the IPL. Definitely, the BCCI made a rule that every player should go and play First-class cricket. So if you don’t follow the rules, then they have to take some action and set an example for others,” added the former pacer.

Adding a new twist to the whole story, KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit had stated Iyer was having an injury issue which he got sorted. However, reportedly, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) declared the Mumbai batter fully fit. The 72-year-old asserted, if a player is fit, he should play domestic games.

“They have to play (first-class cricket) if they are fit. The main thing is fitness. If they are fit, then they can play the first-class season. But a good season in IPL can always be beneficial, and there is no doubt about their class. They have done so well here and there. But it is the BCCI making sure that the boys are disciplined,” he added.

While Iyer made himself available for Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy semifinal, Kishan was seen playing at the DY Patil T20 tournament. The Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper was also caught on camera at the Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding bash in Jamnagar along with other cricketing celebrities.
