Wrestling World Olympic Qualifiers: Aman Sehrawat Locks Paris Game Quota, Saves India From Embarrassment

Istanbul: Aman Sehrawat lived up to the high expectations by locking the Paris Olympics quota in the men’s freestyle 57kg category but Deepak Punia was eliminated from the qualification race following his crushing first-round defeat at the World Qualifiers on Saturday. Aman, the U23 world champion and also the senior Asian Championship title winner, was expected to put up a strong show and he did not disappoint. The 20-year-old Aman, who trains at Chhatrasal stadium, got double digit scores in all his three bouts, winning two of them by technical superiority.

He is first Indian male wrestler to secure berth for Paris Games, saving the country from embarrassment of no qualification in men’s section. Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Dahiya also competes in 57kg and if WFI holds trials Aman may have to wrestle with him to book his Paris ticket.

Also putting up an impressive show was Sujeet Kalkal, who lost the men’s 65kg semifinal 1-6 to Mongolia’s formidable Tulga Tumur-Ochir, the Asian Games champion and Asian Championship silver medallist.

Before losing, Sujeet, who competes in a category which the celebrated Bajrang Punia had made his own, expectedly put up a fighting show, winning 3-2 against Uzbekistan’s Umidjon Jalolov and followed that up with a technical superiority victory against Korea’s Junsik Yun.

He now needs to win two bouts on Sunday to qualify for the Paris Games. Aman logged points comfortably in both his bouts, winning 10-4 against Georgi Valentinov Vangelov before overpowering Ukraine’s Andrii Yatsenko.

Yatsenko was quick but Aman proved too strong for him. Locked several times in arm-locks, Aman found ways to attack his rival’s right leg and converted them into take down moves. He won by technical superiority, without conceding a single point against the Ukrainian. In the all-important bout against North Korea’s Chongsong Han, the Indian wrestler displayed tremendous defense and counter-attacking skills to emerge a comfortable winner with a 12-2 scoreline.

The first period was close and Aman led 3-2 but he gave no chance to Han in the second. Han had got into a strong position when he got hold of Aman’s left leg but the Indian found a way to wriggle out and push his opponent out for a 4-2 lead. He executed a takedown move and then rolled Han thrice in leg-lace move to end the bout.

Punia (86kg), who had missed a bronze medal at the Tokyo Games by a whisker, bumped into a very powerful Zushen Lin from China in his first bout and ended up losing 4-6 despite taking the lead. Punia, the most experienced wrestler in the Indian squad, was quick with his attack in the first period, which he ended with a 3-0 cushion. However, the Chinese turned the tables on the Indian, beginning with a double-leg attack which he converted into a takedown move for two points.

He rolled Punia to make it 4-3. Running out of time, Punia was quick with his moves and looked for a two-pointer near the edge of the circle but the referee awarded a push-out point. The Chinese was still ahead on criteria. He ended Punia hopes with another takedown.

The Chinese later lost his quarterfinal, closing the repechage route for the Indian. In the 74kg weight class, Jaideep Ahlawat pulled off a stunning four-pointer double-leg attack after trailing 1-3 to win 5-3 against Moldova’s Vasile Diacon and move into the pre-quarterfinals.

He also won his next bout by technical superiority against Austria’s Simon Marchl but lost his quarterfinal tamely 0-3 to Slovakia’s Taimuraz Salkazanov. He remains in contention though. If the Slovakian reaches the final, Jaideep will get a chance via the repechage route. Earlier in the day, Deepak (97kg) and seasoned Sumit Malik (125kg) lost their first-round bouts.

FACT CHECK: Will DMK Field MS Dhoni vs AAP’s Gautam Gambhir in 2024 Lok Sabha Elections?

https://dailysportsnews23.blogspot.com/2024/02/fact-check-will-dmk-field-ms-dhoni-vs.html

Chennai:
With the much-awaited Lok Sabha 2024 elections coming up, there are speculations on social media that DMK may field Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni against AAP’s Gautam Gambhir. So, how much of it is true? It is absolutely false, there is nothing official to prove there is any truth to this. A report on The New Indian Express claims that MK Stalin may have a closed-door meeting with the CSK captain. But how much of it is true cannot be confirmed. Amid all these rumours, Dhoni has started his preparations for the upcoming season of the IPL. Here is how fans reacted to the false claim.

CSK would start IPL 2024 as defending champions and in all probability this will be Dhoni’s last year. And if this is his last year, he would like to sign off on a high.

‘If I Was Better, I Be In Olympics’, Ravichandran Ashwin Hits Back At Alastair Cook’s Allegation Of Purposely Running In Protected Area

https://dailysportsnews23.blogspot.com/2024/02/if-i-was-better-i-be-in-olympics.html

New Delhi:
Ravichandran Ashwin has been all over headlines during the Day 2 of the third Test between India and England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, on February 16. Be it for taking 500 wickets or withdrawing from the third Test due to a family emergency. However, he was also at the center of a controversy for running on the protected area of the pitch that even cost Team India 5 penalty runs.

During the 16th over of Day 2, Ashwin was warned by umpires for running on the protected area and as it was a second offence from the Indian team, the visitors were gifted 5 free runs. Earlier, Jadeja received a warning from umpires for the same, which was the first offence. However, the former England skipper, Alastair Cook believes Ashwin did this purposely to gain advantage during his chance of bowling.

“Is it deliberate? Yes, it is. It’s a tactical ploy that you can disturb the middle of the wicket because Ashwin wants as much help [as possible] when he can bowl. Normally, it happens in the third innings. You’re 150-200 runs ahead and you think, ‘just make sure you get up and down the wicket’… that was gamesmanship there, wasn’t it?” Cook said while sharing his insights with TNT Sports.

However, Ashwin totally denied the allegations from Cook and blamed his poor motor skills for it. “They clearly warned some of our batters (on Thursday) for running on the pitch. I was aware of it, but my poor motor skills didn’t allow me to get off the pitch in time. If the English media and players think it was on purpose, it wasn’t. If that’s how they want to treat it, so be it. I went to (on-field umpires) Joel (Wilson) and Kumar (Dharmasena) and said ‘that’s pure poor motor skills. If I was any better, I would have been in the Olympics. Why play cricket,” Ashwin was quoted by Dailymail.

FIH Pro League Hockey: Fighting India Lose 4-6 To Australia Despite Harmanpreet Singh’s Brace

https://dailysportsnews23.blogspot.com/2024/02/fih-pro-league-hockey-fighting-india.html

Bhubaneswar:
Skipper Harmanpreet Singh’s brace went in vain as the Indian men’s hockey team conceded three goals in the final quarter to lose 4-6 to Australia in a FIH Pro League match on Thursday. It was Australia who started and finished the match in style with the Indians dominating in the middle period. Harmanpreet (12th, 20th minutes) converted two penalty corners, while Sukhjeet Singh (18th) and Mandeep Singh (29th) were the other goal getters for India.

Blake Govers struck twice for Australia in the second minute besides Aran Zalewski (40th), Lahlan Sharp (52nd), Jacon Anderson (55th) and Jack Welch (58th). The Kookaburras took India for a surprise at the start of the match with Govers handing the visitors a 2-0 lead in the second minute.

He first scored from Australia’s first penalty corner past India custodian Krishan Bahadur Pathak and then doubled his side’s lead with an unstoppable shot past the goalkeeper. It was full press from the Kookaburras in the first 10 minutes as they secured another penalty corner soon but the Indians defended stoutly.

It was relentless pressure from Australia and it took a save from Pathak to deny Welch from a penalty corner. In the 12th minute, India secured their first penalty corner and Harmanpreet made no mistake, firing in with a rocket flick which Australia goalkeeper Andrew Charter had no answer to.

India grew in confidence with the goal and started to dominate the proceedings and minutes later Abhishek’ shot from Sukhjeet’s feed was saved by Charter. The hosts continued their attacking game and secured their second penalty corner soon but it was wasted.

Sukhjeet levelled the scores for India in the 18th minute, putting in a wobbly ball from Abhishek. Two minutes later, Harmanpreet gave India the lead converting another penalty corner and then a minute from half-time Mandeep scored with a bullet shot from top of the D after receiving a defence splitting 45 degree ball from his skipper.

Trailing by two goals, Australia pressed hard after the change of ends and earned a couple of penalty corners and from one such chance, Zalewski deflected in Goovers flick. The fourth and final quarter completely belonged to Australia as they pumped in three more goals through Sharp, Anderson and Welch to pocket three points from the game. India will next play Ireland here on Friday.

IND Vs ENG, 3rd Test: Sarfaraz Khan Gets Alastair Cook Praise After Maiden Fifty On Test Debut In Rajkot

https://dailysportsnews23.blogspot.com/2024/02/ind-vs-eng-3rd-test-sarfaraz-khan-gets.html

Rajkot:
Former England captain Alastair Cook was in complete awe of Sarfaraz Khan as the youngster scored a free-flowing 62 in his maiden innings I international cricket against England in the ongoing third Test on Thursday. Sarfaraz was one of the two debutants for India in the middle-order as the hosts missed the services of Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. While Iyer was dropped after a string of below-par shows, Rahul (injury) and Kohli (personal reasons) were ruled out.

Coming in after the fall of captain Rohit Sharma, Sarfaraz took his time in the middle initially before playing his natural game, like the way he has done for Mumbai in domestic cricket. The right hander played positive cricket and was particularly harsh against spinners Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed.

“I enjoyed Sarfaraz’s batting. I was intrigued to see him because you don’t average 70 runs in first-class cricket without being a serious player or run-getter,” legendary Cook was quoted by TNT Sports. Hailing from Mumbai, Sarfaraz has been a consistent performer in Ranji Trophy for the past few seasons.

In fact for two consecutive seasons in 2019/20 and 2021/22, Sarfaraz scored 900-plus runs in the Ranji Trophy. Cook also indicated the placid wickets in India and likes the way Sarfaraz played late against the spinners.

“You sometimes question some of the stats in the Ranji Trophy because they play on some really flat wickets – Jadeja has got a triple hundred there. But actually, this guy can bat. It was a real shame he was run out. I liked how positive he was and how late he played the ball to the spinners,” he further added.

Such was his domination in the middle, Sarfaraz also equalled Hardik Pandya to become the joint second-fastest India to score a Test fifty on debut. Both Sarfaraz and Hardik scored their half-centuries in 48 balls.

However, it was a miss-communication between him and Ravindra Jadeja the made Sarfaraz run out. At the end of the day, India were at 326/5 with Jadeja (110 batting) and Kuldeep Yadav (1 batting) in the crease. It was Jadeja’s fourth Test hundred and second at the Saurashtra Cricket Association stadium.

Earlier, captain Rohit Sharma also stood tall with his 11th Test ton to revive India. With the hosts reeling at 33/3, Rohit and Jadeja forged a 204-run stand for the fourth wicket to save the sinking ship. Rohit got out for 131. On Day 2, there is still more batting to come for India with another debutant Dhruv Jurel and Ravichandran Ashwin yet to bat.

How Suryakumar Yadav Brought Sarfaraz Khan’s Father Naushad To Rajkot

https://dailysportsnews23.blogspot.com/2024/02/how-suryakumar-yadav-brought-sarfaraz.html

Rajkot:
Naushad Khan wasn’t ready to travel to Rajkot to see his son, Sarfaraz Khan, make his Test debut for India against England on Thursday. But it was one message from Sarfaraz’s Mumbai teammate Suryakumar Yadav that changed Naushad’s mind as he along with his daughter-in-law took the flight to Rajkot to see his dream come true in front of his eyes. Tears rolled down from Naushad’s eyes as Sarfaraz got the coveted Test cap from Anil Kumble.

Sarfaraz ended up making a strokeful 62 on debut. It could have been a different innings alltogether had the 26-year-old not been a victim of a miss-communication with centurion Ravindra Jadeja. Naushad revealed on the sidelines of the game that a message from Suryakumar convinced him to travel to Rajkot.

“Initially, I thought I wouldn’t come as that would put Sarfaraz in some kind of pressure, and apart from that I also had a bit of a cold. But Surya’s message almost made me melt,” he said. Naushad read out the message from India’s best T20 batter.

“I do understand your emotions. But trust me, when I made my Test debut (last year in March against Australia in Nagpur) and was receiving my Test cap, my father and mother were just behind. And that moment was something beyond special. These moments don’t come too often.

“So I would suggest that you must go,” those were the words from Suryakumar. Having received such a message, Naushad made arrangements to travel to Rajkot. “After this message from Surya, I couldn’t stop myself from coming. Just took a pill and came here yesterday,” he said.

The 26-year-old stated runs and performances did not matter to him as much as playing for India with his father there to watch him. “It was my father’s dream to play for India but unfortunately it couldn’t happen due to some reasons, there wasn’t much support from home then. He worked very hard on me and is now doing the same with my brother. It was the proudest moment of my life,” he said.

“Runs and performances were not on my mind as much as I was happy playing for India in front of my father,” he added. “He was not ready to come (to Rajkot) but some people insisted that he goes. Obviously he had to come over since he worked so hard only for this day.”

“He was very emotional as I took the cap in front of him and so was my wife. I felt as if some pressure was off my shoulders given the hard work he had put in on me and I did not waste it,” he stated emotions still raw after a whirlwind day.

IPL 2023: Suresh Raina Impressed With Emergence Of Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana

New Delhi: In Chennai Super Kings’ six-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at Chepauk on Saturday, their fast-bowling trio of Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, and Matheesha Pathirana stepped up to give the four-time champions a rare double over the five-time winners.

While it was heartening to see Chahar pick up two wickets after missing many games due to injury, what would have gladdened Chennai’s die-hard fans would have been the performances of Deshpande and Pathirana, who are slowly emerging as fast-bowling mainstays for MS Dhoni, despite the injuries in the fast-bowling department in the run-up and mid-way of the competition.

Deshpande has been Chennai’s leading wicket-taker with 19 scalps and wore the purple cap multiple times in the ongoing season. Though his economy rate is on the higher side, Deshpande has been able to impress the onlookers with pace, swing as well as variations upfront.

“Like, he got Green out in the last game and got Rohit out too at the Wankhede. One would see that he was bowling proper Test-match length and for doing so, one has to think within the box. He’s impressed a lot and is very much into the game situations along with a great seam position,” said Suresh Raina, currently an IPL expert for JioCinema, in a select virtual interaction.

Apart from the starting bursts, Deshpande has taken eight wickets in death overs this year, just behind his team-mate Pathirana’s ten scalps, though his economy rate is on the higher side. But something which has caught the eye of Raina, the former India and Chennai Super Kings player, has been Deshpande’s execution of Yorkers.

“Tushar Deshpande has the pace, variety, swing, bounce and his biggest strength is of bowling yorkers while executing them under pressure. One has to give kudos to his belief, self-confidence, mindset. Plus, Dhoni is using him well in middle overs, last five overs and with new ball.”

“He has a very good action, bowls while coming close to the stumps and believes a lot on his yorker. All the plans he’s trying to execute, everything is working out and all of the credit goes to Dwayne Bravo, who’s become the bowling coach of CSK.”

“In my years while playing for CSK, this is the first time I am seeing these good yorkers being bowled, all thanks to Bravo and his philosophy used to be of bluffing the batters even if he didn’t get the yorkers right,” he added.

It’s no secret that Pathirana’s stocks as a reliable death overs bowler are on a rise in IPL 2023 and his spell of 3/15, where he didn’t concede a boundary, and applied brakes on Mumbai’s batting in the back-end.

With precision in delivering his yorkers and slower balls, Pathirana showed how lethal he can be with his hard-to-pick slinging action and release point being lower than Sri Lanka bowling stalwart Lasith Malinga.

“I think he has been very good. He’s bowling with good pace and I was fortunate enough to give him his first Man of the Match award in his life. He was happy in bowling with a different pace. We have seen Malinga in Mumbai and now we are watching one more Malinga in CSK.”

“He’s the future of CSK and is very difficult to hit off him. He has a powerful yorker and slower ball, apart from having a different sling action and is very difficult to hit him on his merit, which shows he has a good future,” concluded Raina.
