IPL 2025 mega auction: Teams may retain up to five players, no Right to Match option

New Delhi: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is likely to take place towards the end of this year. Mega auctions always paint an interesting combination for teams, and retaining the players might be one of the most troublesome jobs. As per a report by The Indian Express, the BCCI is probably going to sanction retention of up to five players for the franchises before the auction of the IPL 2025. The report further mentioned that the Right to Match (RTM) option will not be available this time.

If teams can retain five players, that would be a huge gain for Mumbai Indians. They can retain five of their superstars: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya so that the very spine of their team will not break, providing the base for further creation of a potential strong team around these established performers.

As reported by IANS, the mega auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is expected to take place at the end of November or in early December, according to sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The rules and regulations for the auction will be released in a few days, the sources added. Over the past decade, the IPL has conducted two major auctions at four-year intervals. The first was in 2014, followed by another in 2018, marking the return of Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings after their two-year suspensions.

Regarding the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction, sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have confirmed to IANS that the event is likely to be scheduled for the end of November or early December. “IPL 2025 auction will take place in November end or early December this year. Rules of it will be out in couple of days,” BCCI sources informed IANS.

The Covid-19 pandemic pushed the mega auction scheduled for 2021 a year back. Teams had to extend the contract of their players by one more year to ensure there is no disruption in squads during a period of lockdown by that much. This season ensured franchises could carry their core players while there is an upheaval due to the pandemic.

Similar to the 2022 auction that held in February and 2023 and 2024 auctions in December, IPL 2025 mega auctions will also be on a two-day format. This format allows enough time for all franchises to make strategic decisions and make necessary bids for desired players, thus ensuring that an all-rounded process of team-building is enforced.

At the last mega auction held in 2022, it was allowed that the IPL teams can retain as many as four players. The franchises are divided on the number of players to be retained ahead of a new three-year cycle. Some cricket teams are asking for a retention cap of eight while some others have been perfectly okay in retaining four or five players. These perspectives mainly reflect the strategic approaches that teams undertake toward building and maintaining their squads ahead of the next cycle.
