Ranchi: Amid much speculation over who will become India’s next coach of the cricket team, looks like MS Dhoni could be interested in the role. As per a report in Hindustan Times claims that Dhoni could be Rahul Dravid’s successor. Earlier, it was reported that CSK coach Stephen Fleming is also being considered. But the latest report claims that Fleming is already too occupied with franchise cricket and would not like to take up the job till 2027.
“Fleming hasn’t said no. He has expressed his concerns about the tenure of the contract, which is nothing unusual. Even Rahul Dravid wasn’t keen in the beginning. He was persuaded. It shouldn’t be a surprise if the same thing happens with Fleming. And who better than MS Dhoni to do the job?” a BCCI source told Hindustan Times.
“Opening channels with Dhoni during the IPL was not the right thing to do, but now it may be worth a shot,” the source added.
A couple of days back, Dhoni, who was part of the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024, could not qualify for the playoffs as they lost their last league game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Dhoni, who has been the most successful Indian captain ever, was part of India’s T20 World Cup squad in 2021 as the mentor of the side. While it did not help India win the title, it would be interesting to see if Dhoni actually takes up the coaching job.
This IPL season, Dhoni has amassed 161 runs in 11 innings of 14 matches at a strike rate of 220.54 and an average of 53.67.
