Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan Alright! But Why Didn’t BCCI Give Kuldeep Yadav ‘Grade A’ Contract?

Delhi: In what could be labelled as a stunning move, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) cracked the whip and walked the talk as they released fresh Central Contracts for Indian cricketers in which, the names of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were missing. But, another thing that seemed a little unfair was Kuldeep Yadav not bagging a ‘Grade A’ contract. Kuldeep, who was in the ‘C’ bracket, was promoted to the ‘B’ bracket in the new contract. Kuldeep has been one of the best spinners in the world across formats over the past two seasons.

The Chinaman featured in nine T20Is, and picked up 14 wickets in them, at an average of 13.14 in 2023. What was even more impressive was his economy, which was 5.96 only. Anything under six nowadays in white-ball cricket is good. In Tests, although he did not play any in 2023, but has been excellent in the limited last few opportunities that have come his way.

Also in 2022, Kuldeep picked up eight wickets in the solitary Test he played – that included a five-wicket haul. And now, it is early days in 2024, yet he has picked up 12 wickets in three Tests versus England. And in ODIs, in 30 matches, he picked up 49 wickets, at an average of 20.48.

The BCCI said in a statement that Shreyas and Ishan, who were in Grade B and C respectively in the last central contracts list, were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations. It also recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team.
